Position Summary:

Because the Orthogenic School is both a therapeutic day school and a residential treatment center nursing responsibilities are heavily weighted towards working with psychiatric conditions and medications.  Scope of responsibilities includes providing direct care of students and staff with psychiatric and medical concerns, acute illnesses, or injuries. Handling emergency situations such as: diabetic emergencies (primary insulin reactions), acute asthma episodes that do not respond to medication, seizures, accidents, injuries, allergic reactions, and medication side effects. Monitoring students with chronic health problems and informs staff members of associated health risks in relation to classroom activities.

Conducts health reviews with parents/guardians during the admission process. Monitors and treats infectious diseases, maintaining record keeping, maintaining medical equipment and supplies, reviewing the health of students. In conjunction with the academic and residential program staff members, the nurse participates in delivering services outlined by the treatment plan, including Individual Educational Plan. Stays informed about the Illinois Board of Education regulations regarding immunizations and physical exams required for school attendance. Properly records and files doctor's notes, prescribing and dispensing records, and any other pertinent medical records. Keeps a daily log of all student visits to the medical office, including the student's name, time of arrival, reason for visit, and any treatments given. Communicates all pertinent healthcare information to staff, students, families, and other relevant personnel and agencies.  


Position Salary & Benefits:

  • Salary is commensurate with experience.
  • Education/Experience Minimum Requirements:
  • LPN or RN with an active license in the State of Illinois required.
  • ISBE school nurse license preferred.
  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree preferred.



  • Three years of nursing experience preferred.
  • One year of experience working in a psychiatric setting preferred.
  • Experience working in a residential facility preferred.  
  • Knowledge of patient care fundamentals, including aseptic principles and techniques required.
  • Ability to provide direct patient care in a professional and respectful manner required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication required.
  • Ability to read documents or instruments required.
  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks with occasional interruptions required.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality while handling sensitive situations required.
  • Ability to solve problems by applying math or reasoning principles required.  
  • High stress environment  


Working Conditions:     

  • Ability to bend, crouch, or stoop
  • Ability to carry or lifts loads of up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to operate equipment necessary to perform job
  • Ability to safely defend self/or others in hostile, combative situations
  • Ability to Use Standard Office Equipment
